Help for Paster Joaquim

Joaquim 02

Joaquim 01

A huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who recently donated money to help Pastor Joaquim repay an unforeseen loan.

BGBC supports the Evangelical Church of Guinea Bissau, with a particular focus on the work of Pastor Joaquim.  In a recent update the church heard how a sudden tornado last year had destroyed the roof of the Bible and Agricultural Training building that Pastor Joaquim runs.  Pastor Joaquim was forced to take out a loan in order to carry out the essential repairs to the roof.  The majority of the loan had been repaid, but there was still £500 outstanding that Pastor Joaquim had no means of raising.

Rick Woodward, who was leading the service that morning, challenged the congregation to raise the money by the end of coffee that morning, by pledging and donating the money to Margaret Alford (our ambassador for Pastor Joaquim at BGBC).  Margaret was overwhelmed by the response – not only were enough donations made to cover the £500 loan, but gifts were also pledged that will enable the food needs of Joaquim’s family to be supported for the next 12 months, and for a chicken project to be set up.  This will provide Pastor Joaquim with 200 chickens, 20 cocks and chicken feed for 12 months, which will provide food for the family and give them produce (eggs and meat) that they will be able to sell to raise some much needed finances for everyday items and school fees etc.

On behalf of Pastor Joaquim, Margaret would like to say a big THANK YOU and GOD BLESS YOU to all those who have financially supported this family and their community, both in response to this particular trauma, and throughout this year.

The team will be looking into other sustainable projects (like the Chicken project) which will help the people in Pastor Joaquim’s community to become more self-sufficient and bring them out of poverty.  If you are interested in this work, please do let Margaret know, so that she can keep you informed of their progress.

Congratulations Charlie!

Congratulations to Charlie (and the whole of the Ingram family) as Charlie was overwhelmingly voted by the church to become our next Team Leader at the Special Church Meeting on the 5th July.

We all look forward to working with you to continue to grow the fellowship and work of Bessels Green Baptist Church.

Bruce Dyer Visits the God Squad

Around 150 people attended the recent God Squad annual football competition.  As well as some great football, Bruce Dyer (ex-Crystal Palace player) was in attendance, and was able to share his story with everyone.

It was a fantastic event, raising £500 for charity.

Congratulations to Chris Wood, whose team won, and who got to have his photo taken with Bruce Dyer!

Moving Forward

Following the Trustee’s acceptance of Neil Durling’s letter of resignation, a plan of ‘events’ has been drawn up by the Trustee’s.  This is an exciting time for Bessels Green Baptist Church as we look to the next step in our future, and we would encourage everyone in our congregation to attend and be part of as many of these ‘events’ as possible.

  • Sunday 7th June: Vision and Prayer – Charlie will briefly present his vision of the way ahead to the church.  This will be followed by a time of prayer, together as a church.
  • Sunday 14th June: Prayer meeting led by Colin following the morning service, for about 30 minutes.
  • Sunday 21st June: Q & A – following the morning service there will be a chance for the church to have a Q & A with Charlie.  Then during the Evening Gathering there will a prayer meeting led by Graham and Matt.
  • Sunday 5th July: Church Meeting – (moved forward from Sunday 19th July) a chance to decide as a church how we move forward.
  • Sunday 19th July: Farewell BBQ – this is Neil’s last Sunday preaching, and morning service will be followed by a ‘Farewell BBQ’ – details to follow later!

Should you have any questions about these ‘events’ please contact Matt Young, or any of the Elders.
